Superlab Launches: A Film Studio for the Companies Reinventing Food and Materials

LOS ANGELES — Superlab, a Los Angeles film production company, is open, making documentaries, commercials, and social films for the companies building the future of food and materials.

Founded by filmmaker Mike Malagon, Superlab draws on more than a decade of work with brands including Patagonia, Airbnb, Microsoft, Google, and Coinbase. The studio points that experience at a narrower target: the startups and scientists reinventing what we eat and what we build things from — precision fermentation, cultivated protein, alternative materials — and the problem most of them share, which is that they can't yet explain what they do in a way anyone remembers.

"Advances in food and materials could improve the environment, protect animals, and help feed people, often all at once," says Malagon. "But the ideas get stuck on skepticism and jargon. Our job is to make them feel worth wanting, not worth apologizing for."

Superlab has already worked with Change Foods, a precision fermentation startup developing dairy ingredients without the need for cows.
